Pros

Unusual wood that is different, but more than equal to, maple or birch. Great finish.

Cons

If you don’t try them, you won’t know what you’re missing.

Verdict

Whether or not oak can ever become a genuine third option of shell material remains to be seen, but by judging this kit it certainly deserves to.

Oak isn't as popular as maple or birch, but there isn't really any good reason why not. People just haven't caught on yet. The Yamaha Oak Custom has a distinctive, quality sound. If you want something more unique - check these babies out!

I like this kit. It’s not the most expensive or exclusive kit in the world. It’s a bit of a workhorse, would be great for working drummers and I am sure it would sound fabulous in the studio (didn’t have time to try it, but it has all the right characteristics). I know this shouldn’t influence anyone (it will, though), but apparently quite a few of Yamahas endorsees are requesting Oak Customs over other ranges. I have already seen Oak at V2002 and (I think) Reading (festivals all look the same on the TV after a while). I only hope that Yamaha don’t do a ‘Beech Custom’ on the Oak, if you see what I mean. When Yamaha bought out the Beech Custom as a ‘cheaper’ kit a few years ago, it was so good that, like the Oak Custom, many endorsees asked for the Beech. It was so good that the Beech Custom disappeared after a short while and was reinvented as the Beech Absolute as part of the Absolute series along with Maple and Birch. Now there is basically nothing wrong with this, except that the Beech Absolute is more expensive than the Beech Custom was so less people could afford a bargain. I have been told by Yamaha that this wont happen, but if you want a bargain, and you like the Oak Custom, I would buy one now.
