Viewed from the perspective of the Nokia QWERTY candybar handsets that have gone before it, the E6 is a fitting evolution. The high-resolution touchscreen makes far more sense than a pair of soft-key buttons, especially when it comes to navigating full webpages, and the keyboard shouldn’t give E71/E72 upgraders much room for complaint. The handset as a whole is well-built, offers great battery life and has – macro shots aside – a decent camera, especially when you consider the overall business focus.

Sadly, in comparison to the rest of the smartphone market – and even with Symbian Anna on board – the E6 experience falls short. If you’re a Microsoft Exchange user then the sync will work for you, but many individuals and businesses using Google instead, and that isn’t delivered as well. The browser is a big improvement over previous Nokia handsets, but nonetheless lags behind other phones. We’re not talking unbalanced comparisons with, say, dual-core superphones, either: pages on the E6 loaded slower than on the HTC ChaCha, another mid-range QWERTY phone.

It isn’t all bad. The Nokia E6 delivers some delights, not least of all in terms of build quality, screen performance and battery life. It’s such a shame that the area the handset falls down hardest is usability, a vital bridge between user and handset. Symbian Anna doesn’t modernize the OS enough to make it competitive and it repeatedly presents a convoluted and frustrating user experience just begging to be streamlined.

It may be hard to believe, but pushing the negative aside for a moment and the E6 also manages to do something wonderful – it fills us with hope. With beautiful hardware, this handset serves as a beacon, highlighting what Nokia can get very right. So while we can’t recommend the Nokia E6 unless you’re into your Symbian, we’re watching this space closer than ever to see what’s next in terms of OS, because chances are, it’ll be fundamentally better. For an alternative to the Nokia E6 in an Android guise, check out the HTC ChaCha or the Samsung Galaxy Pro, which are not only running a much better OS, but also come at a cheaper price.

For those looking for a powerful QWERTY keyboard smartphone south of Rs 20K, the E6 is definitely a good option. Obviously in-spite of the new Symbian update the E6 is no rock star, it neither has the customization options of Android nor does it have the intuitiveness of Apple's iOS, but as a standalone QWERTY smartphone it does just fine, in-fact better than most BlackBerries. The keyboard is among the best we have ever seen and its feature set is up there with more expensive smartphones, which makes this device a very tempting option for modern day messaging addicts!

The Nokia E6 is a well-built, very capable business phone with plenty of apps and features to suit business users. It's built for text heavy users, with a powerful camera for good light photography.

However, while Symbian Anna is a step forward, it still feels like it's hamstrung by previous iterations with a slightly clunky feel and long time to open some applications still present.

With MeeGo, Nokia has proven it can make a more modern smartphone interface. With the thumb-friendly touchscreen along with the proven E-Series physical QWERTY keyboard, this is a strong competitor to alternatives such as the BlackBerry Bold 9780 and BlackBerry Bold 9900.

The Nokia E6 won't convert Android and Apple users, because this isn't where it's aimed, but it is a smart buy for many text-heavy business users out there.
