| There are a lot of similar mixers out there, and most of them sound pretty good. You have a lot of choices, but the Mackie 1604?VLZ3 gives me the sense that I'm using a good quality one, too. And for me, that makes the job easier and more fun. It's a solid, proven design that worked well years ago and works even better now. | |

| If you already own a Mackie 1604 mixer, you don’t necessarily need to run out and upgrade it—although owners of the original version will hear an appreciable difference from one end of the unit to the other. But if you’re looking for a keyboard mixer, studio mixer, or just want some solid-sounding preamps, the 1604-VLZ3 delivers a heck of a lot of bang-for-the-buck. You may find less expensive 16-channel mixers, but they won’t sound as good or be as durable as the Mackie. Nor will their control labels be as readable! | |

| Even though it’s hard to say goodbye to an old friend, I have to admit that I love the new Mackie 1604-VLZ3 mixer. Not only is the new look an upgrade to my professional image, but the sound quality of the VLZ3 is a marked improvement. My live mixes were good before, now they are highly detailed and cleaner than ever. Studio-quality sound in a nightclub—imagine that. Hey, maybe it’s time to replace my old, battle-scarred 1402-VLZ Pro too. | |
